4v3 Half Field Fast Break With Trailer

This is the old school way to teach fast breaks.  It practices offensive ball movement and defensive rotations movements in a classic 4- on-3 fastbreak.  The trailer ensures the offense has a sense of urgency which is much more like a live game fast break.

It is good to start by teaching the basic set up and ball movement for the offense and positions for the defense..  But as soon as possible you want to progress to a drill where the players are not already starting in the fast break positions.

  • Start three attackmen, and three defensemen and a goalie at one end of the field set up in the propper fast break formation.

  • Start a line of offensive midfielders and a line of defensive midfielders at the midfield.

  • The coach will pass the ball to the offensive midfielder as starts the fast break to play out a 4-on-3 situation.

  • The defensive midfielder releases once the offensive midfielder makes his first pass.

  • This can also be accomplished utilizing the face off lines and having the leave at the same time

    • The defensive midfielder starts at the end of the face off line

    • The offensive midfielder starts at the midfield line to get a head start.

  • If the trailing midfielder disrupts the play there should be a major penalty for the offense as that means they were playing with the ball much to long.
