Full field 2v1 ground balls into a fast break

This is a competitive drill that works on ground balls, transition and fast breaks.  It is fun as the players can really just get after it.

  • 3 attack and 3 defense on both sides with goalies in the cage.

  • set up a 2 vs 1 ground ball on both sides of the field

  • You can have a coach on each side of the field to roll out the ground balls or there is only one coach, they can roll the ball out from the center of the field to both sides.

  • The drill starts with a 2 v 1 groundball to one side.

  • If the team of 2 wins the ground ball it is a 5v4 break towards their offensive end.

  • If the lone player wins the ball then their two teammates on the opposite side will release, creating a 6v5 towards their offensive end.  I love this aspect because it forces the players on the other side to pay attention as they may or may not be released.

  • play it out until the ball changes position due to a ground ball, intercepted pass or a goalie save.

Note: It is important to make sure the players competing for the ground balls are as balanced as possible so the ball goes to both sides of the field.

Coaching Points of Emphasis:

1. Make sure the players PUSH THE PACE after they pick up the ground ball

2. person team→1 player needs to box out so her teammate can scoop GB.

3. Single player→ Protect stick and keep cradle low to maneuver out of double.

2. Defensive needs to communicate and get back to the hole

3. The Offense needs to learn to create space and move the ball as fast as possible for a quality shot to take advantage of the number advantage.
