3 Man Ground Ball Elimination

A simple but effective twist on a traditional ground ball drill to make sure every player practices ground ball technique.  All too often when we do one vs one or two vs two ground ball drills the losers never actually practice picking up a ball, rolling away and making a pass.  This drill solves that.

To keep things fast-paced, balls get rolled out instantly after a coach receives it from a player, no resetting, they compete from where they are at that moment.  This also makes things more game-like as in a game you do not go for a ground ball lined up at a designated starting point.

  • Start with 3 lines of players

  • The ball is gently rolled out to 10-15 yards. Please do not roll the ball 20-30 yards away.

  • 3 players leave and compete for the ground ball.

  • One player wins the ground ball battle, rolls to the outside, and quickly passes the ball back to the coach and exits the drill.

  • The ball gets immediately rolled out again to the 2 players who did not win.

  • The two remaining players who competed but did not pick up the ground ball have to compete again and get back in the original line. This time we have two players 1v1 competing as individuals.

  • The player who wins the ground ball immediately rolls to the outside and fires a pass to the player standing next to the line.

  • The ball gets immediately rolled out again to the player who did not win.

  • The remaining player picks up the ground ball, rolls to the outside, and passes to the coach.

  • Even though he is competing solo he still gets to practice technique.
