Zone Breaker Double Cut with a Backside Curl Out of a Open Set

Beating a zone is all about getting the defense to move and then finding the open space to fill into for a shot.
This play causes a lot of confusion for a few reasons

  • Teams have a man defending the crease in a zone, therefore when there is nobody in the crease it can cause a lot of confusion for less experienced teams.

  • Teams are typically trained on defense to call out a cutter coming through.  But covering 2 players cutting through can present a larger problem.  Especially if they know how to cut through the soft part of the zone.

  • In order to ver the two cutters a defender on the wing will likely follow one or both of the offensive players in leaving that side open for the player at X to fill into the space for a shot.

Ball starts at X

  • Ball Starts at X

  • As the ball makes its way up the side the two players on the opposite side cut through looking to receive a pass.

  • If a pass is not made the ball will continue to the top

  • As the ball is being passed up top the player at X will curl into the open space on the wing and be open for the shot.

  • If he decides to not take the shot, you now have 2 men in the crease giving the defense a new formation to navigate.

    • The players who are now in the crease can either fill in at the top, at X or do both giving the options of a look

    • that your team is comfortable with.
