Circle 1 Settled Weave

The Settled Weave is a fantastic way to settle the ball against a high pressure defense.

It will cause confusion for the defense making it difficult for them to put full pressure on the ball and can create very good opportunistic quick-striking matchups for the offense.

Run correctly the Settled Weave causes the defense to naturally start to sluff off and give space to the offense.  Players on offense should learn to identify that and use the time and space to catch the defense off-guard.

In the Settled Weave:

  • The ball starts up top with #2.

  • #2 throws the ball to #1 and these two players run to switch places.

This creates a Pick And Roll Back Door Cut opportunity for the offense especially if the defense is in a high-pressure shut-off mode.  A disciplined defense will normally stay with their men and will fight through the pick, or really the "scrape", set by #2, but to do this they will have to give space to #1.

  • #1 carries the ball to top center and throws to #3, then #1 and #3 run to switch places.

    • This is a mirror of what happened on the other side and has the same chance of creating a Pick And Roll Back Door Cut.  Notice that the ball carrier is on the outside and the "picker" or "scraper" is on the inside.

-The player without the ball needs to be conscious of avoiding a moving screen or interference penalty and might have to stop running to set a true stationary pick if the defense is playing a High Pressure Shut Off.

This is demonstrated in the Colorado State lacrosse championship in 2012 on the GPVideography YouTube channel. Starting at 30:35 in the video.
