Attack Rotation Off of a Quick Whistle

On the face-off restart whistle (or anytime there is a restart above the restraining line), the team should be ready to initiate a "play fast" sequence — alternating the finish — forcing the defense to defend and the opposing coaches to coach (a.k.a. — yell "warnings" of the anticipated sequence — further causing hesitation of the defensive players — allowing the offensive team to play even faster).

  • On the whistle the two middies without the ball (on the wing on the face off)  should read there defenseman

    • If they are not running back on defense and staying with the middies up top then they can stay high up clearing space down low.

    • If they do run to the hole the two middies should run with them forcing those two middies who just entered the defense organize with their teammates to be the first slide.

    • This way it does not matter if one goes in or both.

  • Regardless of what happens the 3 attackmen down low will rotate in a triangle.  This is a very simple rotation for the attack but is very complicated for a defense to work out in a quick start situation.

  • The middle coming down with the ball has 3 main options

    • Take the ball to the goal himself

    • Look for the outlet coming around from X for a shot

    • Roll back and send it to the attackmen coming through the crease.

  • Regardless of what choice is made you want to encourage your team to take a shot as there is a back up at X to get the line.

This is what it means to play fast! On the whistle sprint towards the goal and get off a shot.  If it does not work a man is at the end line to get the ball and start the offense.
